The Net Zero Lawyers Alliance (NZLA) was established ahead of COP26 to mobilise commercial law firms, lawyers, and the law to accelerate the transition to net zero. NZLA plays a pivotal role in positioning commercial lawyers to help reduce emissions, manage climate risk, and align with global climate targets. Through collaboration, thought leadership, and practical legal guidance, NZLA works to address legal and systemic barriers to climate transition across sectors.

We are seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Chair of the Board at an important stage in the organisation’s development. NZLA has established its three-year strategy and is focused on delivering its mission while strengthening its global profile and impact. The Chair will play a key role in supporting the Board and executive team to implement this strategy and elevate the organisation’s visibility, partnerships, and influence.

Working closely with the Chief Executive and Board, the Chair will provide strategic leadership, ensure effective governance, and act as an ambassador for NZLA across the legal sector and wider ecosystem.

The Role

The Chair will:

• Provide leadership to the Board, ensuring effective governance and oversight  

• Support and constructively challenge the executive team in delivering NZLA’s strategy  

• Help guide the organisation as it implements its strategic priorities and expands its impact  

• Act as a credible external ambassador, engaging senior stakeholders across the legal, financial, and philanthropic sectors  

• Support the development of key relationships and partnerships  

We are particularly interested in individuals who bring:

• Significant senior leadership experience in law, climate or philanthropy, or closely related fields  

• A strong interest in climate, sustainability, and the net zero transition  

• Prior board and chairing experience, with sound governance judgement  

• Strategic insight, with the ability to support and challenge constructively  

• A strong commitment to equity, integrity, and responsible transition  

Commitment

This is a voluntary, non-remunerated position.

The time commitment is variable, with an expectation of approximately two days per quarter. This includes:

• Four Board meetings per year  

• One annual Board away day  

• Occasional optional events and ad hoc engagement as required  

The initial term is three years, with the possibility of renewal.
